When I lost my short-term memory six weeks after starting Lipitor, I immediately suspected my new medicine and discontinued the drug. At my next NASA physical, I was urged to resume taking it and reluctantly agreed, only to suffer a much worse memory loss a few weeks later. For 12 hours, I suddenly became a teenager with total recall for my high school days, but absolutely no awareness that I was a doctor, married with children and a former NASA astronaut. This began my decade of research on the subject. To my amazement, I discovered an extraordinary lack of information in my own medical community as to the true spectrum of statin drug side effects. I started a Web site (www.spacedoc.com), which has become a major message board and resource for those with statin drug-associated side effects. My four books—Lipitor, Thief of Memory, Statin Drug Side Effects, Statin Damage Crisis and The Dark Side of Statins—present the reasons for adverse effects of statins on the human body.

Since its discovery in 1922, vitamin E has been the subject of controversy due to ample confusion about its benefits and alleged harms to health. Poorly interpreted meta-analyses on just one of its eight forms – alpha-tocopherol – have often discounted positive effects of the entire vitamin E family, a collective term for four tocopherols and four tocotrienols.

Topics for the webinar include:

vitamin E: Historical Development

Differences in Tocopherol and Tocotrienol Structures

Alpha-Tocopherol Interferences

<Commercial Sources and Composition of vitamin E in Nature

Antioxidant Functions

Unique Functions of Tocotrienols Beyond Tocopherols

Emerging Trends in Tocotrienol Applications

Speaker:

Barrie Tan, Ph.D., earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and doctorate in analytical chemistry at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and later became a professor of chemistry and food science/nutrition at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His research expertise included lipid-soluble materials such as carotenoids, tocotrienols/tocopherols, CoQ10, omega-3s and cholesterol. He was the first to introduce tocotrienol’s benefits to the nutrition industry. He founded American River Nutrition Inc. in 1998 (which won the SupplySide Scientific Excellence Award in 2010) and developed the first-ever tocopherol-free tocotrienol product derived from annatto beans. Today, the focus of his research is on phytonutrients that have an impact on chronic, degenerative and cancer diseases.

Here is an excerpt:

“Vitamin E is well known to consumers across the globe, but their tocotrienol-form is not. In the first part on of special series on tocotrienols, NutraIngredients-USA looks at the potential health benefits of nutrients described as “the next generation vitamin E”.
The vitamin E family
Tocotrienols are a form of vitamin E that have traditionally been in the shadow of the more popular vitamin E form – tocopherols.
Overall, there are eight forms of vitamin E: four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). Alpha-tocopherol (alpha-Toc) is the main source found in supplements and in the European diet, while gamma-tocopherol (gamma-Toc) is the most common form in the American diet…

American River Nutrition, Inc. is a proud recipient of the 2010 SupplySide® West Scientific Excellence Award for its patented DeltaGOLD® product line and have achieved self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in July 2010.

American River Nutrition’s DeltaGOLD® Tocotrienol to Receive 2010 SupplySide® West Scientific Excellence Award

American River Nutrition, Inc. is proud to announce that it will be a recipient of the 2010 SupplySide® West Scientific Excellence Award for its patented DeltaGOLD® product line. Submissions for the award were evaluated based on science/research methods, scientific breakthrough, and innovation and appeal for the manufacturing community. The company will be presented with the award on Friday, Oct. 22 at 2pm in the Virgo Publishing booth, #22061. Along with this award, the innovative science-based company is pleased to announce its achievement of self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in July 2010.

Joining American River Nutrition at SupplySide® West 2010 will be Dr. Duane Graveline, a former NASA astronaut and medical doctor who will be signing autographs for his book, Statin Damage Crisis. In his book, Dr. Graveline suggests several alternatives to statin therapies, one of them being the DeltaGOLD® annatto tocotrienols he strongly supports.

Introduced in 2003, DeltaGOLD® is a tocotrienol ingredient derived from the annatto plant, and is composed of 90 percent delta-tocotrienol and 10 percent gamma-tocotrienol. Uniquely, DeltaGOLD® is naturally tocopherol-free, an important feature in light of the discovery that alpha-tocopherol interferes with tocotrienol benefits. Dr. Barrie Tan, Ph.D., president of American River Nutrition, remarks that receipt of the award bears tremendous significance for the company, which has been prioritizing in vitamin E education of industry members, health professionals, and consumers alike. Dr. Tan believes that tocotrienol is an emergent vitamin, dubbed by experts in the field as “The Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherol” or “The 21st Century Vitamin E.”

American River Nutrition, Inc. started in January 1998 in Hadley, Massachusetts. The company was formed in response to the market need for innovative products that are natural, have little to no known side effects, and address a preventive approach to age-related and/or degenerative disease states, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

American River Nutrition, Inc. manufactures and sells the most concentrated and purest natural form of delta-tocotrienol available in the world. DeltaGOLD® is rapidly becoming known as the best-in-class tocotrienol for cardiovascular, cardiometabolic, and cellular health.
