Tocotrienols: Emerging Science and Innovations of Vitamin E

Posted by admin on April 17, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Event Date: Tuesday, Apr 17, 2012 02:00 PM EST
Posted March 7, 2012 in Webinar, Tocotrienols, Heart Health, Bone Health, Metabolic Syndrome, Bone/Joint Health

Speakers: Barrie Tan, Ph.D., Founder, American River Nutrition Inc.
INSIDER Partner Series

The first 90 years of vitamin E research has produced prolific and notable discoveries. Until the last few decades, attention has been given mostly to the biological activities and underlying mechanisms of alpha-tocopherol, which we now know is one of more than eight vitamin E isomers. Tocotrienol discovery came much later, in 1965, but existed for almost 20 years as an obscure vitamin E.

Tocotrienols have proven to contain some exceptional benefits that aren’t shared by their older tocopherol siblings. Although both tocopherols and tocotrienols are antioxidants, today a bright spot for tocotrienol research is in cancer and heart disease.

Emergent fields of tocotrienol research are promising – with many covered in this Webinar, including angiogenesis, bioavailability, bone health, gastric injury, inflammation, life extension, metabolic syndrome, radiation protection, skin health, tocopherol interference and the recently discovered effect on cognitive impairment.

Currently, tocotrienols have reached a new measure of research height: more than one-third of all vitamin E tocotrienol research of the last 30 years was published in the last 3 years. The thriving field of tocotrienol research gives ground for publication of the 2nd edition of Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols (Fall 2012), a compilation of the latest tocotrienol research discussed in the Webinar. It’s the time to lead the next 90 years of vitamin E research with a focus on tocotrienols.

Learn about:

  • Latest discoveries in antioxidant, cardiovascular disease and cancer
  • Emerging areas of tocotrienol benefits
  • Bioavailability and interference in tocotrienol usage
  • Sources and novel combinations with tocotrienols

Speaker: Barrie Tan

Barrie Tan, Ph.D., Founder, American River Nutrition Inc. Barrie Tan, Ph.D., earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a doctorate in analytical chemistry at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He later became a professor of chemistry and food science/nutrition at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His research expertise includes lipid-soluble materials such as carotenoids, tocotrienols/tocopherols, CoQ10, omega-3s and cholesterol. He was the first to introduce tocotrienol’s benefits to the nutrition industry. He founded American River Nutrition Inc. in 1998 and developed the first-ever tocopherol-free tocotrienol product derived from annatto beans. Today, the focus of his research is on phytonutrients that have an impact on chronic, degenerative and cancer diseases. Dr. Tan was elected to be senior editor of the second edition tocotrienol compilation, Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols (scheduled for publication Fall 2012).

Tocotrienols in Combat: Fighting the Statin Damage Crisis

Written By:Duane Graveline, M.D., M.P.H.

Annato plant, a source of tocopherol-free tocotrienol.

When I lost my short-term memory six weeks after starting Lipitor, I immediately suspected my new medicine and discontinued the drug. At my next NASA physical, I was urged to resume taking it and reluctantly agreed, only to suffer a much worse memory loss a few weeks later. For 12 hours, I suddenly became a teenager with total recall for my high school days, but absolutely no awareness that I was a doctor, married with children and a former NASA astronaut. This began my decade of research on the subject. To my amazement, I discovered an extraordinary lack of information in my own medical community as to the true spectrum of statin drug side effects. I started a Web site (www.spacedoc.com), which has become a major message board and resource for those with statin drug-associated side effects. My four books—Lipitor, Thief of Memory, Statin Drug Side Effects, Statin Damage Crisis and The Dark Side of Statins—present the reasons for adverse effects of statins on the human body.

Vitamin E & Tocotrienols – Webinar

Posted by admin on February 11, 2011 · 2 Comments

Explore the unique benefits of tocotrienols, the lesser known but rapidly emerging branch of the vitamin E family, with vitamin E expert Dr. Barrie Tan.

Watch Now

Since its discovery in 1922, vitamin E has been the subject of controversy due to ample confusion about its benefits and alleged harms to health. Poorly interpreted meta-analyses on just one of its eight forms – alpha-tocopherol – have often discounted positive effects of the entire vitamin E family, a collective term for four tocopherols and four tocotrienols.

Topics for the webinar include:

  • vitamin E: Historical Development
  • Differences in Tocopherol and Tocotrienol Structures
  • Alpha-Tocopherol Interferences
  • Antioxidant Functions
  • Unique Functions of Tocotrienols Beyond Tocopherols
  • Emerging Trends in Tocotrienol Applications

Nutra Ingredients-USA

Nutra Ingredients-USA has written an article on the great benefits of Tocotrienol.

Here is an excerpt:

“Vitamin E is well known to consumers across the globe, but their tocotrienol-form is not. In the first part on of special series on tocotrienols, NutraIngredients-USA looks at the potential health benefits of nutrients described as “the next generation vitamin E”.
The vitamin E family
Tocotrienols are a form of vitamin E that have traditionally been in the shadow of the more popular vitamin E form – tocopherols.
Overall, there are eight forms of vitamin E: four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). Alpha-tocopherol (alpha-Toc) is the main source found in supplements and in the European diet, while gamma-tocopherol (gamma-Toc) is the most common form in the American diet…
